Graphic Inspiration

The Elements of Japanese Design, Dower via Ley Lines
Thanks to the Darrick and the CR Woodworking library, I sourced this book Elements of Japanese Design: A Handbook of Family Crests, Heraldry and Family Symbolism with over 2,700 designs by Kiyoshi Kawamoto. My drawings have been sliding much more toward the graphic, so this book found me at the perfect moment. There are many fragments of  these that I look forward to expanding on, and miiiiight even be thinking of doing a series of crest inspired drawings...

Settling Back into the Mendocino Coast

We've officially kicked off year two in Fort Bragg, CA. Returning to the abundance of roadside activity is making me smile- wild foragers, decorated hitchhikers, the new farm stand at the end of our street (YES!), turkey vulture conferences and all the original back-to-the-landers looking for a honk in support of their miniscule Occupy and Peace demonstrations. We love it here. Today: Darrick- first day of year two at CR Fine Furniture program. Me- dreaming big for this year in terms of artwork, weaving, food raising, establishing a few new relationships and big time mischief overall.

Just outside the front door. Breakfast and dessert.

My best kimchi yet since I picked up the proper red pepper.

Morning ladies.

Backyard hunting.

So what if it's grey here.

Siun

Lana Fee Rasmussen, Print on paper, 2004
We are concluding our summer trip in Southern California at just the perfect time. Trees, mellow drivers, chillier climate, our own space- all things we are quite ready for. That being said, we had a very enjoyable time.

Before we left, I caught a shot of one of my old prints I made of my sister Siun from 2004-ish. I love this print and love the look on her face in her skeleton costume.

Darrick completed a coffee table commission this summer as well! Photos to come.

Thinking about synesthesia

Todd Selby x Christine Sun Kim on Nowness.com.

Christine Sun Kim makes sound dance and paint, while Neil Harbisson listens to color. Fortunately for most of us, we were not born with any compromised senses. Unfortunately, most of us will never be able to create such inspired work as a result of our functionality. In fact, these two display everything but a hindrance, more of a brilliant gift. I can't help but wonder what THEY see and feel everyday.
