Since moving on from the Mendocino Coast, we continue our nomadic adventures in other parts of California. Collectively, we have stayed in seven different beds in the past month. We are thrilled to be slowly transitioning to the Santa Barbara coast by the end of the summer- very much an exciting collaborative shift with dear friend Neil Harrison. For now, we are living everywhere it seems, trying to stay focused setting up makeshift workspaces where we can.

A couple weeks past, we spent several days on a gorgeous property in Covelo, CA with a friend Garrett and his two kitty ladies. Building, chatting, cooking, reading and swimming in the Eel River consumed our days.

The last two photos shared here are a couple picks from a very personal trip to Oklahoma, a place new to me but native to my Muscogee Creek, Lenape and Seminole family. We celebrated for the Muscogee Creek Festival and Green Corn Dance with beautiful native songs and traditions.
Driving a laughably enormous U-Haul South last week, California whizzed by us in a completely new way. Our two year jaunt in the remote Mendocino Coast of CA is over. While we have all kinds of faith in our future plans, things like misty Redwood mornings, guaranteed parking spaces, moss, impeccably clean air and community breakfasts will be missed dearly and will forever mark a time of heightened creativity and adventure. On a more personal note, the woodworking family surrounding the College of the Redwoods Fine Furniture program has left us with a momentous amount of gratitude. Here a few favorite images from the last bits...
To be frank, it took me a little while to fully understand what The Global Creative was doing. I knew I dug it, but I was really eager to understand more about their vision. I knew art, education and producing a more globally aware youth was at hand- all things we care about.

These two women, Amelia Pacheco and Rachael Edson, are full time public high school educators (Amy, Special ED. Rachael, Art) in Southern CA. In response to the common struggles of keeping students engaged, today's stifling state standards and a lack of camaraderie in sharing successful lesson plans amongst educators, these ladies decided to be proactive in addressing these issues.

The Global Creative is a young organization, run by Amy and Rachael on nights and weekends. I certainly believe that visionary is a word I would use to describe what they're doing, because they are responding to something much larger than them. They are intelligent, creative and brave enough to try to ameliorate problems that could very easily be (and are) passed off as simply out-of-their-hands. The whole teacher/nonprofit organization thing is not exactly lucrative easy street. This is a labor of love. This is truly great work.

Some key points to understand what they are doing today:

+Their website stands as an online source for any teacher to access free lesson plans that engage students in something creative while drawing in ethical and globally minded topics as well as suit the state standards.

+Hosting monthly craft workshops in donated space around Long Beach, bringing community together to learn something and raise awareness about the organization.

+Collaborating with other local organizations/companies (namely Yellow 108 and Aosa Project) to support other people and causes they believe in.

Read their full mission statement.

We are excited to share some photos of their workshops and great highlights from our conversation about what they do now and what they will do in the future.

On why they started The Global Creative:

Rachael: We both were trying to write interesting lesson plans and saw what was working with our students. We both have different challenges with our types of students. Teaching English to people with special needs is a challenge to get them to care in the same way trying to teach art history to a kid who just wants to get their hands dirty is a challenge. So how do you get them engaged in the mundane aspects of education? They love the getting-your-hands-dirty type of stuff, but getting them to care about why it’s important is the challenge.

Amy: We felt like there is a huge need for teachers to have readymade lesson plans that are actually interesting for students, and really connects students to their education. Because if there’s no interest in what’s going on, they’ll just never see why it’s important. Then we started developing more interest in instilling ethics into our lesson plans, and more of a global-mindedness.

R: Yes and another big thing was the reluctance of teachers to share the cool stuff they would come up with. And this is not true across the board, but a lot of teachers feel like their really-cool-show-stopping lesson they do every year is their intellectual property.

A: The main thing we wanted to respond to is that within all these different teaching styles and within all these different schools it felt one of the problems that we consistently see with our kids is that these kids in the US are getting a free education that costs 6-10k a year. They don’t seem to care. They don’t seem to see how their education matters for their future. It also matters just for their thinking. I’m not saying this is all students, but a lot of students expect school to entertain them. But we’re not TV. We’re not the Rhianna Lights video. We can’t compete with Transformers. There’s this growing feeling that kids aren’t connecting with things, especially the way parents are too in the school system. I remember when I was growing up, if my teacher said that I did something bad, I DID. My parents weren’t going to go to bat with teacher.

We wanted to create lessons that worked regardless of whatever educational problem- the parent problem, the state problem, any problem.

R: Address the morality, the ethics and the soft skills that are required after school; teaching them little mini lessons within great lessons about how to be a good person.

R: I think we needed it to legitimize our program. We don’t have time to do outreach. We’ll get there. That is one of ours goals for this year is making sure people know our website exists. I thought the workshops would be a good way to bring our program to the community, getting our name out there and having some fun with adults rather than just being stuck in the classroom setting.

A: In our lesson plans, there is always a creative component, a widening global perspective and then of course the state standards. So there are three components. It has to have something to do with ethics. It has to have something to do with standards and it has to have something to do with creativity. Actually there are four because it has to have to do with widening the global perspective. So, we could just take out the state standards and then it’s relevant for anyone. The biggest things in all the situations are that the adults have really been responsive to creating art and wanting to learn how to do something without even knowing there is a cultural component. So when we do basket weaving, they don’t really realize that it’s a craft native to California.

Introducing the two teachers you wish you had in high school, Rachael Edson and Amelia Pacheco- co-founders of The Global Creative.

Based in Orange County, CA these two are high-school educators by day and creative non-profit visionaries by night. Through art-related practices, The Global Creative seeks to stimulate young minds well beyond what is received at school. TGC lessons seek to illuminate worldwide issues such as human-caused animal instinction, and ideas to better our communities in general. The more I learn about these women, the more impressed I become. I look forward to starting a dialogue with them soon to share in a later post. I would love to know more about their ambitious vision with this momentous work, as clearly things are just getting started.

We finally had the opportunity to stop by THE NWBLK, the space representing Yaffe Mays in San Francisco. The space was impressive in scale and slick in presentation.

As many may not be aware, Yaffe Mays is the collaboration of furniture makers Rebecca Yaffe and Laura Mays (the director of Darrick's woodworking program at College of the Redwoods). Their representation in the city is not only exciting for their careers, but also what we believe to be a valuable extension of the school and its leader.

With no relation to THE NWBLK, the woodworking class' final Spring show this year will be in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco for the first time ever! There will be the usual showing at Mendocino's Highlight Gallery, and the SF exhibition will follow it. Opens Friday May 17.
More on that later.
Yesterday was the first time I saw all of my wall drawings painted over at Lost Coast Culture Machine. Wow. This show was a great opportunity to work in this way, creating my own little home of drawings within a finite space. I've also never worked on this scale with my own work. The success of the show comes in my determination to continue working with many of the forms I came up with on these walls- in print form most likely.

Thank you to Anne and Deitmar from LCCM for supporting this project!

Darrick and I have agreed that if ever we were paid to take photographs, we would hope to do it the way Leslie Williamson does. In plain terms, she travels the world photographing interiors of the foremost makers of the modern mid-20th Century era, predominantly. I wrote briefly about her previous book Handcrafted Modern: At Home With Mid-Century Designers in a previous post here, but she needs donations to finish the next installment Handcrafted Modern Europe! Watch the video above to get a strong sense of the project's need or simply link directly to the Kickstarter page here.

I have always been a little bored with some publications solely dedicated to pictures of interiors. While I may enjoy the content, the images start to feel muddled quite rapidly. Leslie captures something much more personal. She pays genuine allegiance to a canon of modern craftspeople that we too idolize. As important as this work is for its preservation of these people and places, memorializing a time when people valued things with such care in the home can only mean great things for makers today.

We were both pleasantly surprised when Leslie recently came by both of our Feb 1 exhibition receptions while she was in town on a writing jaunt in Mendocino. In the ten minutes I spent talking with her, there was certainly no mistaking her complete devotion to this work. She is a one-woman show and very much an artist simply trying to do everything to continue working. This book has to be made!
Spring. Unsprung but daffodils are always a good sign.

As we've grappled without a computer for a grueling 2 full months, the foot stomping tantrums are officially over. We have now successfully moved in with our brand new apple product, and what a fine sleek housemate she is.

Coincidentally, it is now also time to retire a sketch book (collection-of-clippings book too). Here are some images.

....More images on this later, but the second half of my drawing installation is opening this Friday March 1 at Lost Coast Culture Machine here in Fort Bragg!
This past weekend I participated in Lost Coast Culture Machine's Holiday Maker Faire and Silent Auction. LCCM has a knack for corralling interesting makers of the Mendocino Coast. It was a great time and an impressive collaborative effort. Locals set up stations for origami, metalwork, screenprinting, leather animal ornament making, photos, paper-making and block printing. We were all a little disappointed that the Tarot card reader couldn't make it.

I walked away with some wonderful treasures, including a painting by an artist I've come to admire around here- Carolyn Schneider... as well as selling my own drawing that I donated to the auction (photos below).
I like many things artist Chuck Close has said. Similar to jokes, quotes don't really stick with me. For some reason I can remember some of Close's words. This is a CBS special where guests write a letter to their younger selves. Those of us who have nothing to complain about need a bit of perspective from quadraplegic painters sometimes. A couple pieces I like:

Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work.

Quadraplegics don't envy the able bodied. We envy paraplegics.

Never let anyone define what you are capable of by using parameters that don't apply to you.

KILLSCROW: one word, pronounced exactly as it reads. This is a Delaware Lenape name passed down from my late grandmother Sharon. We have slowly adopted this name for all the work Darrick and I are building, a collaborative brand still very much in the works. Darrick and I have big dreams for Killscrow, all surrounding the idea of a life together selling items we make, food we grow and space we build in an area with a wilderness. Ley Lines was the original online space for that, but soon everything will be streamlined as Killscrow only. Thank you for all the support! You know who you are.
From the summer drawing series, I've drawn much inspiration to convert those images larger. At first I considered having prints made for me, and then became very possessive. I decided I wasn't ready to send anything to anyone that I hadn't touched. Instead, I've decided to experiment with different ways of reproduction from the original images I pulled from the series- working as if the original 5"x7"s are my demos/sketches, as I had done little to no sketching on that collection. Each of these is 22"x30", ink on Arches paper.
The function, craftsmanship and ethos of Shaker life has always been intriguing, especially how it effects their built environment. There are many romantic quotes from the sect regarding their approach to craft, none of which they intended to sound romantic to us of the outside world I'm sure. There is certainly something in the Shakers' closeness to every material aspect of their lives that so many young people are trying to connect with once again- though I'm sure you won't see me or any of my friends rising into the workshop at 5am, peforming my "sundry chores" before 6am, working aaaalll day until the "bell on the roof of the dwelling sounded the five-minute warning for supper" at 6pm. Never say never.
The craftsmanship of the Shakers, being a joint or community enterprise, is definitely distinguished by that fact from the products of individual effort. One result, of course, was a tendency towards uniformity. But more important was the evolution of certain standards of excellence whose widespread application was made possible by the compactness of the group and the genuineness of its ideals. Talent was stimulated by social contacts, the constant exchange and interaction of ideas and the consciousness of a united destiny.
Last year a lot shifted at CR Fine Woodworking with the appointment of Laura Mays as its new director. On Darrick's end, he feels such overwhelming gratitude for sharing his first two years in the shop with Laura's first two years as director- momentous, life-changing years for both. On my end, I am more closely involved with Laura's partner, CR graduate Rebecca Yaffe and their gorgeous off-spring Thea. After weeks of stalling, I finally realized why I found this post so difficult to articulate. It is due to the deeply rewarding nature of my personal relationship with Yaffe Mays as a family. Although, I find the personal is essentially always a part of the woodworking community sprung from College of the Redwoods. It is what students rely on when they feel a little bananas in the shop and need to commiserate. It is what compels the instructors to open the doors of their homes to entire classes overnight each year. It is what bonds families of students outside of the shop. And it is certainly what makes the work special.

All things personal aside, the creative partnership of Yaffe Mays has recently opened an exciting inaugural group show at San Francisco's (seriously new) New Black Gallery- an impressive 9,000 square foot industrial space in SF's Mission, which appears to be marketed as a retail environment/gallery. The opening in September seems to have been nothing short of a wild success, for the space and for Yaffe Mays. We cannot wait to explore the gallery ourselves and are thrilled at the prospect of such an interesting collaborative space being invested in makers from the CR family.
